The History of Cyprus, Why It’s a Must See Place

Cyprus is an island located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It is accessible from Asia, Africa and Europe. Cyprus became a republic in 1960 after gaining independence from the United Kingdom. From 1974, Cyprus has experienced a de facto partition with Greek Cypriots in the south controlling 63 per cent of the Island and Turkish Cypriots in the north controlling 37 per cent. Cyprus has seen many invaders come and go, but it has stood the test of time through thick and thin and prides to be one of the best tourist attraction in the area. Mycenean Greeks, Persians, Crusaders, Ottoman, British and Russian expats have all invaded Cyprus at one time in history and left their mark for all to see. Today, the Republic of Cyprus has a central government with the president being the head of state as well as the head of government. Even though the Republic is internationally recognised, its jurisdiction extends only to the government controlled area of the Greeks Cypriots and not to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which is only recognised by Turkey and controlled by the Turkish Cypriots. But contrary to that obnoxious past, lies a beautiful Island with astounding and gleaming beaches and blue seas. It is always summer here, and it is a perfect getaway if you want to have total relaxation.
